Politicians Playing Whack-A-Mole With Multi-Billion Dollar NASA Programs
This video is embedded in my blog post titled Why NASA Won’t Send Astronauts to the Surface of Mars. People have been getting a kick out of the video. Plus, it actually makes a good post all on its own. So here it is.
First off, a little background info to put things in context:
This is a pretty silly (embarrassing), lo-fi, light-hearted, comical video shedding light on a very serious, hard-hitting problem. Every time a new president gets elected, the White House changes NASA’s plans. Millions to billions of dollars worth of momentum and progress gets put in jeopardy and/or thrown out the door.
But, changing plans isn’t the real problem. In fact, that’s what we want to happen if something isn’t working. The heart of the matter is that our political leaders haven’t homed-in on a direction that makes sense from a broader, long-term perspective that withstands the test of time.
NASA is focused on destinations, like the Moon or Mars. But, we need to be focused on capabilities. Developing an in-space economy, focused on the use of space resources, is one of the most valuable capabilities we can create. It’s a capability that organically leads us in directions that make sense and allows us to start building the framework of a self-supporting space civilization.
This is space exploration that won’t be dependent on or limited by NASA’s budget or shifts in political direction. Again, see the aforementioned post (Why NASA Won’t Send Astronauts to the Surface of Mars) for an awesome discussion on this topic.
Enough said for this post!
Music in the video is ‘Redhead From Mars’ by Silent Partner.
